Australian Hass Avocado successfully enters Thai Market

26 September 2023

Through a new market access deal signed by Australia and Thailand earlier this year, Australia has successfully opened up its Hass avocado market in Thailand. Thai people can now enjoy Hass avocados imported directly from Western Australia following the first delivery last week.

Thailand and Australia have an established, strong relationship on agriculture. With the elevation of the Thailand-Australia relationship to a Strategic Partnership in November 2020, there are new opportunities to foster closer ties and build more prosperous and sustainable agriculture and agri-food sectors.

Earlier in July, Thailand succeeded in launching Thai cooked duck meat to the Australian market.

“The successful two-way trade in the agricultural sector this year is a testament to the long-standing partnership that benefits Thai and Australian farmers and agricultural industries as well as consumers in both countries,” remarked Australian Ambassador to Thailand Dr Angela Macdonald.

It is a big win for Australian avocados to have gained access to the Thai market.

Australian Senior Trade and Investment Commissioner to Thailand Mr Michael Helleman said, “Thailand’s ultra-sophisticated dining scene is great for our avocados. We’ll be working with our local business network to profile Australian avocados and generate awareness of our high-quality produce among Thai consumers.”

Australian Hass avocados have a superior quality and a creamy rich flavour. They are lauded superfood as they are filled with heart healthy mono-unsaturated fat, fibre, Vitamins K, B5, B6, C and E and more.

Australian growers strictly follow sustainable production and food safety practices making Australian Hass avocados a safe and reliable produce that everyone can enjoy.

Trade has an essential role to play in building this prosperity and supporting lasting food security. Australia and Thailand are net exporters of agriculture, fisheries and forestry products with two-way trade in agriculture worth nearly 80 billion baht in 2022, a 66 per cent increase in value since 2018.

Note to Editors

  • Thailand is Australia’s 10th largest agriculture, fisheries and forestry export market by value in 2022-2023, worth AUD2.5 billion, including horticulture at AUD129.5 million.
  • Two shipments – nearly 6 tonnes of avocados from Australia were exported to Thailand last week.
