Drama, comedy and romance
at the 5th Australian Film Festival
BANGKOK: The 5th annual Australian Film Festival will once again showcase a range of popular and critically acclaimed films from Down Under. Held at SFX Cinema Emporium from 19-25 April, this year’s line-up includes 10 feature films that offer both humorous and serious takes on Australian life, culture and romance.
Many of the films are set in Australia’s stunning natural environment, and feature home-grown stars who have gone on to win international fame like Guy Pearce, Toni Collette, Rachel Griffiths and Hugo Weaving.
Films in the 2007 Festival demonstrate Australia’s distinctive film-making style and creative talent. The award-winning film Somersault tells the story of a young girl's sensory journey, through which she learns the true meaning of love, family and friendship. The film won 14 Australian Film Institute (AFI) Awards in 2004 including Best Film, Best Actor ((Sam Worthington ), Best Actress (Abby Cornish) and Best Director (Cate Shortland).
From award-winning director Craig Monahan (The Interview) comes a moving story of a teenage girl’s dramatic life in Peaches starring Hugo Weaving. Set in vibrant Melbourne, Three Dollars is a drama/comedy about a compassionate man who finds himself with a wife, a child, and only three dollars featuring David Wenham and winner of the AFI Best Lead Actress award, Frances O'Connor.
The Festival includes some popular crime/comedy films, such as The Hard Word starring the talented Guy Pearce and Rachel Griffiths, and Dirty Deeds which follows the story of an Australian gangster and features Toni Collette, Sam Neill and John Goodman. Based on the real life trial of a young Aboriginal man which created headline news in 1959, Black and White is the story of two young lawyers embarking on a battle for natural justice, which has far reaching consequences both for themselves and Australia.
Other highlights are some comedy/coming of age films: The Rage in Placid Lake is an interesting twist on the teen movie; Danny Deckchair is a charming romantic comedy; and children will love the adventures of Hildegarde the duck. For documentary fans, Year of the Dogs is a classic and award-winning film which follows the dramas besetting the Footscray Football Club, from the boardroom to the change-room.
The Festival also includes six award-winning short films: The Mysterious Explorations of Jasper Morello was nominated for the 2006 Academy Awards Best Short Film, won the 2005 AFI Award for Best Short Animation and won the 2005 Vallodalid International Film Festival for Best Short Film; Ward 13 was nominated for 2005 Oscar Best Short Animation 2005; Green Bush won the 2005 Panorama Short Film Award at Berlin International Film Festival; Danya won the best film and direction awards across the globe; Crooked Mick won Best Animation in the 2006 Byron Bay Film Festival, and The Projectionist won numerous international and Australian film awards.
The Festival, organised by the Australian Embassy and SF Cinema City with the support of the Australian Film Commission, seeks to promote understanding of Australian society and culture in Thailand.
