Congratulations to the recipient of the Australia-Asia Award 2004

The Deputy Head of Mission to Thailand, Mr. Perry Head, recently presided over a congratulations ceremony for Ms. Pornsakol Panikabutara who was a 2004 recipient of the Australia-Asia Awards. The Awards are funded by the Australian Government through the Department of Education, Science and Training. The Australia-Asia Awards aim to strengthen Australia’s education and research relationships with Asian countries, including Thailand. The Awards are granted to outstanding graduates of universities in the Asia region to study for higher degrees in Australia. A total of two awards (3 year Ph.D. Award and 1 year Masters Award) were offered to Thailand in 2004. The awards are valued at A$50,000 per annum plus the cost of a return airfare from Thailand to Australia upon completion of the Award.

Ms. Panikabutara finished her Masters degree in Law from the University of Sydney in December 2004. Prior to receiving this Award, she completed her Masters of Law degree from the University of Cambridge (Upper Second Class Honours) in 2003 through a Shell Centenary Scholarship.

She received first class honours (gold medal) in 1999 in her Bachelor of Law degree with a GPA of 3.97 from Chulalongkorn University – this is the highest GPA ever achieved in the Law Faculty since the establishment of Chulalongkorn University in 1933. She has also won numerous Merit Awards and was ranked 16th out of 10,000 candidates in the Barrister-at-Law (Thai Bar) examination in Thailand.

While studying in Australia, Ms. Panikabutara worked part-time as a research assistant to the Hon. John Dowd (AO, President of International Commission of Jurists) on setting up customary law for the Province of Bougainville, Papua New Guinea).
