Throughout March 2007, the Pikture Gallery will be featuring the work of five of Western Australia’s best photographers. Undeclared Customs is the first of an ongoing exchange between the photographic communities of Thailand & Australia.
The project is aimed at developing closer links between photographers in the two countries as well as providing the opportunity for the participants to reach new audiences. In the first stage of the project, five Thai photographers (Surat Osathanugrah, Arnon Hoontrakul, Dow Wasiksiri, Anuchai Secharunputong and Somchai Suriyasathaporn) exhibit at the Breadbox Gallery in Perth throughout February 2007. This is followed by the Australian show at the Pikture Gallery in Bangkok.
The selected photographers comprise a mix of emerging and established professionals, presenting a dynamic, fresh look at our environment and the human condition. Through a mixture of reportage, photo-narrative and portraiture the photographers confront a changing emotional and physical landscape. Each Australian photographer shows their own unique perspective of the world they live in.
Mike Gray’s offbeat humorous images poke fun at the Aussie stereotypes and macho culture, whilst Paul Parin’s sometimes-abstract images of the Western Australian outback show the rich colourful beauty of a vast and desolate land.
Living in a small town in the South West of WA, Yvonne Nietrzeba’s images focus on traversing the cultures between rural & urban living. Her unusual macro images present a fresh look on the quality of light and the elements in the natural world.
Darren Clayton is a documentary photographer with an interest in Asian cultures and has made several trips to Northern Vietnam where he has been documenting the change in rural cultures as the forces of globalisation and tourism encroach on the traditional way of life.
Editorial and Fine Art photographer, Julian Tennant prefers the traditional craftsmanship of fibre-based printing and also uses near obsolete photographic techniques to print his photos making them look like the ethnographic and travel postcards produced half a century ago.
Sean Riley, the senior Australian Trade Commissioner to Thailand will open the exhibition at the Pikture Gallery on the 2nd of March at 7pm. The show is open from 9am until 7pm, Tuesday through to Sunday and will run until the 31st of March. In addition to the exhibition, the gallery will be hosting a “meet the photographer” night where the public can talk to the photographers about their work and what inspires them. A public forum where the Thai and Australian photographers will discuss issues related to working as a photographer is also planned.
