Australian Embassy helps Asian Resource Foundation build Learning Centre for Nong Chok children

The Australian Embassy Bangkok recently provided funding to the Asian Resource Foundation (ARF) to assist in the construction of a Children’s Learning Centre in Nong Chok, Prawat, which is located approximately 55 kms from central Bangkok.

The funding, made available through the Australian Embassy Discretionary Fund, enabled ARF to construct a one-storey learning centre in a poor, rural village where community facilities are very limited.

Children from nearby Muslim and Buddhist villages can now visit the centre after school or on weekends and are able to participate in a range of activities including homework tuition, peace and interfaith activities, arts and crafts and internet use. The children can also visit the centre just to socialise.

In a recent visit to the Community Learning Centre, Ms Bronte Moules, Deputy Head of Mission at the Australian Embassy, said the Embassy was delighted to support children’s education. She said she hoped the children enjoyed learning and making friends, regardless of age or religious background, through the educational extra-curricular activities offered at the centre.

The Australian Embassy Discretionary Fund is part of Australia’s overseas development program. The emphasis of the program is on alleviating basic humanitarian hardship through small grants to community groups and NGO’s engaged in development activities in Thailand on a not-for-profit basis. The funding application round for 2008-09 financial year is now open.
