Australian Embassy & the BMA helped Clean Up Bangkok

(Bangkok, September) - The Australian Embassy, in collaboration with the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA), recently lent their support to the annual Australian-initiated ‘Clean Up the World’ campaign by collecting rubbish and planting trees in the heart of Bangkok. The activities were organised to help make the city greener and cleaner.

Ms Bronte Moules, Deputy Head of Mission, Australian Embassy Bangkok led a group of Australian Embassy staff, diplomatic spouses and family members and staff from Sathorn district (wearing green and gold, the national colours of Australia) on a walk from the Embassy on South Sathorn Road to collect rubbish on the way to Lumpini Park.

At the Park, Bangkok Governor, Mr Apirak Kosayothin and Australian Ambassador to Thailand, H.E. Bill Paterson PSM marked the campaign by planting nine Pink Cassia trees. The activity was witnessed by hundreds of participants from the Embassy, the BMA and nearby districts including Sathorn, Bang Rak and Patumwan and Australian expatriates.

The Bangkok Governor said the BMA had this year organised several activities to raise environmental awareness among Bangkok’s citizens and to address climate change. He thanked the Australian Embassy Bangkok for bringing ‘Clean Up the World’ to Bangkok, noting that the activities held were simple yet practical and set a good example for making Bangkok greener, cleaner and more liveable.

Ambassador Paterson said planting the trees was a practical way to help improve Bangkok’s air quality and beautify its streets. “It is also symbolic of the need to reduce carbon emissions globally, one of the most important challenges facing the world today,” he said.

After the official launch, the Ambassador led a large group of volunteers along North Sathorn Road, from Rama IV to the finishing point at the corner of Soi Convent. All participants got their hands dirty planting tree along the road which is considered among the busiest roads of Bangkok, where diplomatic missions, condominiums and high-rise office buildings are located. A number of Australian children, in particular, were enthusiastic about planting trees in the big city.

About Clean Up the World

Clean Up the World is an Australian initiative – a community-based environmental program that inspires and empowers individuals and communities from every corner of the globe to clean up, fix up and conserve their environment.

In 2007, Clean Up the World is encouraging and supporting members to take action at a local level to help address climate change under the theme “Our Climate, Our Actions, Our Future”. Energy conservation education programs, planting trees, walk to work days and waste reduction projects are just a few of the possible options that members can choose from.

Clean Up the World originated in Sydney, Australia, in 1993 and is held in partnership with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). The campaign brings together community groups, schools, governments, businesses and individuals to undertake activities to improve water quality, clean up local streets, parks, waterways and forests and educate children about the environment.
Now in its 15th year, Clean Up the World mobilises over 35 million volunteers from more than 100 countries annually, making it one of the largest community-based environmental campaigns in the world.
