Australian Scholarships strengthen Australia-Thailand ties
(Bangkok- 25 January 2008) Twenty-six distinguished Thai scholars and professionals have been selected as Australian Scholarships recipients and will travel to Australia in 2008.
“The 2008 Australian Scholarships recipients are all excellent scholars who will share their knowledge, in the spirit of learning and cultural exchange, between Australia and Thailand,” H.E. William Paterson PSM, Australian Ambassador to Thailand said.
The Australian Scholarships Program is the Australian Government’s initiative to promote education cooperation and development in the Asia-Pacific region. Over five years from 1 July 2006, Australian Scholarships have more than doubled the number of Australian education awards previously offered in the region. The awards, worth AUD1.4 billion in total (around Bt37.91 billion), will give more than 19,000 people the opportunity to study and undertake research in Australia.
Australian Scholarships have brought together existing Australian Government Scholarship programs managed by the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR) and the Australian Agency for International Development (AusAID) under one umbrella.
DEEWR has greatly expanded its Endeavour Programme by providing a range of postgraduate, undergraduate, vocational and technical education courses, and research and professional development awards. The programme brings high achieving students, researchers and professionals from around the world to Australia in a broad range of study fields and also enables Australians to do the same abroad.
For the 2008 academic year, 23 scholars from Thailand won Endeavour Awards to join others from the Asia-Pacific region to study and conduct research at internationally-renowned universities across Australia. One recipient, Ms Naowarat Chaiyaput, from the National Food Institute of Thailand, will conduct a study on how to produce agricultural products in Thailand safely and meet Australian regulations.
Also this year, three young Thai students have won the Australian Leadership Awards (ALA). The awards aim to develop future leaders and addressing priority issues.
“Each year, a new group of Australian Scholarship recipients travel to Australia, where they build enduring professional and personal networks with Australian scholars, which continue long after they have returned to Thailand. This leads to strong, ongoing ties between our two countries. I personally congratulate the 2008 Australian Scholarships recipients and wish them every success in their studies and future career,” Ambassador Paterson said.
