Thailand Desktop Exercises Border Security Cooperation

The Australian Government recently supported a desktop exercise with a wide range of Thai Government border control agencies.

A desktop exercise was conducted on 18 and 19 July 2007 in Bangkok. The exercise was conducted as part of the Inter-agency Border Strengthening (IABS) project which is led by the Australian Customs Service and co-sponsored by the Australian Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) and the Australian Department of Transport and Regional Services (DOTARS).

The desktop exercises involved high-level discussions on the civil maritime security environment. It involved a range of Thai government agencies with port or border related functions, including Narcotic Suppression Bureau, Immigration Bureau, Marine Police, Port Authority of Thailand, Marine Department, Office of Narcotic Control Board, Royal Thai Navy and Royal Thai Customs.

The discussions and exercises provided an exciting opportunity for agencies to examine shared capabilities and response capacities in challenging and complex security environments.

The IABS project brings together agencies from across the civil maritime security sector with the aim of consolidating and expanding inter-agency coordination mechanisms and ensuring robustness – particularly during critical incidents

This exercise was one in a successful series of sponsored regional workshops under the IABS capacity building initiative led by Customs with DIAC and DOTARS.
