Pathumwan School helps
the Australian Embassy Clean Up the World

The Australian Embassy Bangkok recently teamed up with the Plant-a-Tree-Today Foundation (PATT) to make an early start on its Clean Up the World 2008 activities by introducing the School Tree Nursery Programme to Pathumwan School, Bangkok.

At the launch of the programme, hundreds of students enthusiastically learned about Australia and the Australian environmental initiative “Clean Up the World”, the importance of forests in our world, simple seed preparation techniques and how plants germinate. The children then planted their own seeds amid laughter and smiles – the first step in becoming the managers of their very own tree nursery.

Sponsored by the Australian Embassy Bangkok, the PATT’s Tree Nursery Programme is provided to schools as a learning tool that gives students hands-on experiences with plants and trees. The programme comes with everything necessary to set up a nursery as well as educational materials and lesson plan ideas.

The Embassy and PATT staff will revisit the school at key stages throughout the programme and provide technical support to the students. Ultimately, the students will plant their trees in the local community and mark the Clean Up The World Weekend to be held from 14 to 16 September this year.

Clean Up the World partners with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) to inspire and assist communities to clean up, fix up and conserve their local environment. The activity mobilises an estimated 35 million volunteers from more than 100 countries annually.

The Australian Embassy Bangkok has been an active Clean Up the World participant. The Embassy has raised environmental awareness in Bangkok by encouraging the use of cloth bags, collecting rubbish in the busiest streets of Silom and Sathorn Roads and planting trees in the heart of the city.

“The Australian Government is strongly committed to tackling climate change and environmental degradation. The Australian Embassy in Bangkok is therefore a proud supporter the Clean Up The World initiative. This year, we have decided to team up with the Plant-A-Tree-Today Foundation to promote environmental awareness and urban renewal. During the six-month Tree Nursery Programme, we hope the students will gain an appreciation of environmental protection and given them the practical tools to make a difference in the future,” said Australian Ambassador to Thailand H.E.William Paterson PSM.

Pathumwan School, under the supervision of the Bangkok Metropolitan Authority (BMA), is located in the Pathumwan district of central Bangkok.
