JOB DESCRIPTION
Title: Media Officer
Agency: Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT)
Section: Political & Economic (POLEC)
Direct Supervisor: Director – Public Diplomacy
Supervisory responsibility: Nil
JOB PURPOSE
The Media Officer has a critical role in supporting the Public Diplomacy section on a full-time basis. The purpose of the job is to:

Devise and implement media strategies in support of embassy activities and Australian Government policies and initiatives. Monitor, disseminate and, where necessary, respond to local media reporting on Australia or Australian Government policies. The Media Officer must maintain and develop a network of key local Thai and English-language journalists.
PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES
The ongoing performance of the Media Officer will be measured on the ability to:

Together with Director Public Diplomacy, develop public relations and media strategies for Embassy activities.

Monitor local news for articles relevant to Embassy work, compile press clippings and keep Embassy staff informed.

Maintain contact with and aware of key local journalists and media organisations (i.e. Thai and Australian journalists / media based in Thailand). Act as main point of responsibility for International Media Visits.

Organise attendance of local media and photographers at press conference, Embassy functions, including outside Bangkok.

Prepare press releases in English and / or Thai. Submission of embassy’s articles for DFAT news. Monthly media summary.

Translate articles, correspondence and press releases, and take photos, if required.

Act as interpreter at press conferences, interviews or other engagements attended by the local media.

Conduct research on specific issues, respond to relevant enquiries, if required

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND OTHER SPECIFICATIONS
To fill the role of the Media Officer, an applicant would require:

Bachelor degree in a relevant discipline
-
Excellent oral and written communication skills in English and Thai
-
Experience in public relations
-
Experience in liaising with the media
-
Knowledge of Australia highly desirable
-
Demonstrated competence in the use of the Microsoft suite of software products, including Microsoft Word, Excel and Access
