Defence Scholarships

Each year a number of scholarships for post-graduate study at the Australian Defence Force Academy (ADFA) are offered to members of the Royal Thai Armed Forces, primarily in the areas of defence, strategic and management studies, but also covering other areas such as engineering. The scholarships include a four-month intensive English language course at Australia's Defence International Training Centre (DITC). These scholarships are only available to members of the Royal Thai Armed Forces and selection is coordinated through Supreme Command Headquarters (SCHQ) and the Ministry of Defence.

Case Study - Australian / Thai Cooperation in East Timor

The successful deployment of an Australian-led INTERFET in 1999 would not have been possible without the support of at least one major ASEAN country. Thailand quickly responded to this requirement, contributing the Deputy Commander, an infantry battalion, a supply ship and a C-130 transport aircraft, as well as staff support.

The interoperability between the military forces of Thailand and Australia that has developed through the regular conduct of combined exercises over many years of a close defence relationship proved to be an essential element that ensured the success of this operation under joint Australian/Thai leadership.

The success of operations in which both Thailand and Australia contribute personnel and equipment as part of the military component of UNTAET, under the leadership of a Thai commander, continues to reflect the high degree of cooperation and professionalism that has developed between the two military forces.

The significance of the Royal Thai Armed Forces' contribution has been recognized by the Australian Government through the award of Australian INTERFET Medals to all participating Thai military personnel, and of the specific award of the Order of Australia to General Boonsrang Niumpradit.
