Health Requirement questions

What is the health requirement?

Every applicant for a permanent visa for Australia must meet certain Public Interest Criteria prescribed in Australia's immigration laws. These include the health requirements.

You may be requested to undergo health examination to satisfy the health requirements. You must arrange for health examination with a panel doctor and/or radiologist nominated by the Australian Government. Examination reports by non-panel doctors/radiologists are usually not accepted.
See: Health Requirements

I have children from a previous relationship who are not migrating yet. Are they required to undergo the health assessment?

Yes. Certain public interest criteria applies to all members of the applicant's family even though they may not be included in the current application.

I have recent reports from my personal doctor stating that I am fit for migration. Can these be accepted?

No. Whilst it is acknowledged that medical practitioners in any country undertake examinations professionally, the Embassy has authorised only certain doctors to conduct medical examinations. These are referred to as Panel Doctors.

If applying for a Visitor visa, you will be advised by staff at the Visa and Immigration Office, Australian Embassy Bangkok if a medical examination is required and you will be provided with the necessary forms required to undertake an examination.

If applying for a Partner, Child, Other Family Migration visa, the medicals may be undertaken in advance of the lodgement of the application, however, you should note that in the event the application is refused no refund of the cost of the medicals is possible. The approved forms must be used. The examination must be undertaken by a doctor who is on the list of approved panel doctors.
The medical forms and the list of panel doctors are also available from the Australian Visa Application Centre.

What is the cost of these examinations and where do I pay?

The cost of medical examinations is a matter for the individual Panel Doctor and these should be settled at the time of examination. Please be aware that these may be subject to change.

I have had a medical examination. The Panel Doctor advised me that the tests were OK. Does this mean that I will now be granted the visa?

A successful health examination result does not mean that a visa will be granted. There may be other requirements that are still oustadning. You will be advised if you are required to meet other leag requirement before a visa can be granted. In some cases your medicals may need to be referred for assessment by a Commonwealth Medical Officer (CMO) in Australia.

If the core requirements are not satisfied, the application can still be refused even though the health requirement is met

How long does it take to have the medical reports assessed in Australia?

It can take from 3 days to 6 weeks for assessment of medical reports in Australia. This period is built into the usual processing time advised to applicants. This however, also depends upon the state of your health.

Why am I asked to undergo further tests when I have already undertaken all the tests?

In certain cases, the Commonwealth Medical Officer (CMO) in Australia may find that the standard tests undertaken by the Panel Doctor are not be sufficient to determine whether the health requirement is met. They may request additional examinations/testing to be done. You will be advised of the required further medical tests.

How does additional testing affect the time taken to process my application?

Where additional testing is required, it can delay the processing of an application. In some cases, e.g. Tuberculosis, prolonged treatment may be necessary before the health requirement is met. In some cases this can take up to 6-12 months.

What can I do to ensure my application is not delayed because of health reasons?

Health processing is one of the main reasons why applications take longer than the usual processing time to finalise. You are encouraged to undertake health assessment as early in the process as possible. An early health assessment can allow the issue of treatment or further testing to be addressed while the core requirements are being assessed.
