Student Visas
Student visas are those who wish to undertake study in Australia in ELICOS, primary and secondary school course, vocational education and training, higher education, post graduate research and some non-award courses.
Student visa applications may be lodged in person at the Australian Visa Application Centre, by mail or courier to the Australian Embassy or in person by prior appointment at the Australian Embassy. See: Lodging visa applications
You will be advised if an interview is required to assist in finalising your application.
Documents required for a complete application
• Form 157A – completed in English and signed by the applicant and each application aged over 18 and over
• A non-refundable Visa Application Charge (VAC) payable either by Cashier’s Cheque (if purchased in Bangkok or Nonthaburi, Samutprakarn provinces) or Bank Draft (only if purchased in Thailand) payable to Australian Embassy Bangkok in Thai Baht. See: current Visa charges
• One recent passport photo of yourself and each applicant included in the application
• A passport for each person included in the application that is valid for the total period of your stay in Australia, or for a minimum of 6 months
• Thai National Identification card and House Registration Certificate / Birth certificate
• Evidence of the relationship between yourself and each family member included in the application (eg birth certificate, marriage certificate etc)
• Military discharge papers (if applicable)
• Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) certificate
• If your family members have turned 5 years of age, but have not yet turned 18, and are remaining with you in Australia, you will need to provide documentation confirming their enrolment in an Australian school (eg. CoE)
• medical and x-ray examination results for yourself and each family member planning to accompany you to Australia. The examination must be undertaken by a doctor who is on the list of approved panel doctors
The medical forms may be obtained from the Australian Visa Application Centre at any time and the medicals may be undertaken in advance of the lodgement of the application, however you should note that in the event the application is refused no refund of the cost of the medicals is possible.
• Evidence you have paid for Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) for the period of your intended stay in Australia for yourself and all family members included in your application
Financial requirements
• Evidence that you have sufficient funds to support yourself and all family members, whether included in the application or not, for the first 12 months of your study and stay. You should provide evidence that you have sufficient funds to cover:
- cost of a return fare for you and any family members included in the application
- tuition costs
- living costs - $12,000 per year for yourself, plus
- $4,200 for your spouse (if applicable), plus
- $2,400 (+ $8,000 per annum for cost of schooling, if aged 5 up to 18 years)
for the first child, plus
- $1,800 (+ $8,000 per annum for cost of schooling, if aged 5 up to 18 years)
for each additional child
The funds to support you and your family members can come from any source, other than non-cash assets. When calculating sufficient funds, non-cash assets may not be used unless they have been liquidated (and held as a money deposit) or used as collateral for a loan.
If you are providing a bankbook, you are required to provide the original bankbook which will be returned to you with your passport.
Applicants under 18 years of age
• An original statement from an Amphur office (Thai Government District Office) giving permission from the non-travelling parent/s or legal guardian/s for the child to travel to Australia
OR
• Form 1229 signed by the non-travelling parent/s or legal guardian/s and witnessed at the Australian Visa Application Centre or by appointment at the Australian Embassy in Bangkok. This consent should confirm the permission of the non-travelling parent/s) or guardian for the child to travel to Australia and the period of time the child is permitted to stay in Australia.

• If you intend to reside in Australia with a parent, or a person who has custody of you, you must provide evidence of the relationship and that they hold, or are applying for, a student guardian visa for the length of your stay or until you turn 18 years, whichever is the lesser period. You will be required to complete the Under 18 Welfare Form
OR
• If you intend to reside in Australia with a relative nominated by a parent or a person who has custody of you, you must provide evidence of the relationship, and that the relative is at least 21 years old, has police clearance, and has the right to remain in Australia for the period of your study in Australia, or until you turn 18, whichever is the lesser period. You will be required to complete and submit the Under 18 Welfare Form.
• Police clearances must be provided by your relative for the country or countries in which they have resided for more than 12 months in the past 10 years after the age of 16. Details on how to obtain a police clearance can be found in form 47P
• a signed statement from your education provider confirming appropriate arrangements have been made for your accommodation, support and general welfare during your stay in Australia
Education Qualifications
• Your educational qualifications, including certificates of training courses and course transcripts relating to studies completed at tertiary/secondary institutions.
• Evidence of your employment if you have ever worked.
Visa application processing time
You can expect a decision on your application within 10 days from the day you lodge your application. The processing time may take longer if the application was incomplete at the time of application or if there are other issues with your application such as character issues relating to previous immigration history or criminal convictions, child custody issues, or if further medical checks are required. If your application is likely to take longer than 10 days, you will be fully informed of the reason for any delays.

Appointments can be made by telephone 02 344 6400 between 14:30 and 16:30 hrs, Monday to Friday, except public holidays.
