Citizenship by descent

If you are an Australian citizen who has a child born outside Australia, you may be able to register your child as an Australian citizen.

Applications may be lodged

at the Visa and Immigration Office

between 10:30 and 12:00 hrs, Monday to Friday, excluding public holidays

by mail or courier sent to the above address.

You should include a Cashier’s Cheque or Bank Draft made payable to The Australian Embassy Bangkok in Thai Baht.  Personal cheques are not accepted. See current Fees & Charges.

Documents required for a complete application

Form 118 to be completed by the Australian parent

• Application Charge must be paid by cashier's cheque purchased in Bangkok or the Nonthaburi, Pathumtani & Samuthprakarn provinces or bank draft to "The Australian Embassy, Bangkok" in Thai Baht. Credit card facilities are not available at the Visa and Immigration Office in Bangkok. This charge is not refundable.

• Australian parent/s born in Australia must provide:
          - certified true copy of whole passport including movement stamps or the 
             period including 9 months prior to the birth of the child; and
          - if available certified true copy of birth certificate

• If one of the parents is NOT an Australian citizen they must provide certified true copy of whole passport including movement stamps for the period including 12 months prior to the birth of the child

• Australian parent/s granted citizenship must provide: 
         - certified true copy of certificate of Australian citizenship; and
         - certified true copy of whole passport including movement stamps for the
           eriod including 12 months prior to the birth of the child.

• Official original birth certificate issued by Thai District Office for child born in Thailand or official original birth certificate for a child born other than in Thailand plus one photocopy.

• Original English translation of birth certificate plus one photocopy.

• Original certificate of name change if child has name amended, including certificate of name change if child has name amended including middle name plus one photocopy.

• Two [2] passport size photographs of applicant [child]

• If applicable, evidence of relationship of child’s parents [marriage certificate, family photographs etc]

• Brief written history of parents relationship.

This list is not exhaustive, you may be requested to provide further documents.

Application processing time

You can expect a decision on your application within 10 days from the day you lodge your application. The processing time may take longer if the application was incomplete at the time of application or if there are other issues with your application. If your application is likely to take longer than 10 days, you will be fully informed of the reason for any delays.

Additional processing time should be allowed for individuals who are also applying for an Australian passport on behalf of the child. The processing of Australian passports is handled by the Consular Section at the Australian Embassy Bangkok. Enquiries relating to procedures for obtaining an Australian passport, processing times and documentary evidence required should be directed to the Consular Section.
